It is likely that everyone, by a certain age, can identify some form of pain they have experienced throughout the course of their lifetime. Because pain is a natural sensation that we all feel in response to the nervous system alerting us that something is wrong. It protects us, by focusing our attention to a specific area of our body that needs care.
But chronic pain is different. It is the persistence of pain that affects people to various degrees, and is usually experienced daily over months or sometimes years. Chronic pain can be caused by an injury such as a sprained back, or can be associated to diseases such as arthritis or cancer. Pain, whether acute or chronic, has multiple causes, and is generally associated to an injury, surgery, or disease. Although, there are individuals who suffer from pain in the absence of a prior injury, illness, or other known causes.
